"We had an amazing experience at the AmaTierra! Bob and Jill are wonderful people on a mission to make the world a better place. They were very hospitable and passionate about what they do. The food was absolutely divine. It was the best food we had in Costa Rica during the two months we were there. The massage and yoga was very healing and refreshing. I would recommend it to anyone that goes through Costa Rica. - A Guest, writing on TripAdvisor.com

Activities & Entertainment

A dip in the pool and lounging with a good book.
Time for reflection, meditation, to just be still and renew your connection with yourself and nature.
A hike to the stream or the pochote tree forest where you might just see a colorful toucan, an iridescent mot-mot or any one of several species of birds for birdwatching.
Horseback riding in the hills with amazing views of the green valleys, the forest and even the Nicoya Peninsula and ocean beyond. Ride to a waterfall or to a secluded thermal water pool (hotsprings).
A visit to nearby San Pablo, a tiny town typical of the "campo", the real Costa Rica, where you might see prancing "pasatrote" horses, a caballero herding his cows or a "futbol" match in the town square. Or visit Puriscal, a more bustling town with its market and traditional town square.

Day trips to nearby attractions including beaches, Turubari Park which features guided rainforest tours and the best canopy (zipline) in Costa Rica, water sports, eco-tours, and rafting.
A library of DVD's with players in all rooms.
Special salsa dance fiestas and musical evenings. If you sing, play piano or guitar we have both, and jam sessions are common at AmaTierra.

"Amazing AmaTierra!" A TripAdvisor Member, Florida, April 2008

"Jill, Bob and Dan take the time to talk with you, to help you plan how you want to spend your time. Jill is a gifted healer and teacher and musician. Bob is such a gracious host, there to greet you when you return from an adventure or to offer a glass of wine before dinner or just to talk.  Read the full review.

Consultation with a professional herbalist opens a door to self-discovery and new possibilities for helping old problems or temporary illnesses. You will be seen not as a person whose symptoms need covering up, but as a unique individual with underlying causes for your imbalances which are equally unique.  A session with owner Jill Ruttenberg, registered AHG (American Herbalist Guild) herbalist will help create a dietary regimen and  lifestyle shift, as well as  addressing your health problems by using herbal and homeopathic remedies.

Jill received her Master herbalist certification from Dr. Michael Tierra, OMD’s East West School of Herbology in Santa Cruz, California. Dr. Tierra is author of many books, and continues to be a mentor for Jill. She is also a colleague of Dr. Andrew Weil's, and regularly attended patient conferences at the Program in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona in Tucson.

What's for Dinner?

"The meals served were the BEST food we ate on the entire trip!"
- Guest  from Winter Springs, FL  TripAdvisor.com July3, 2006

Our local cooks serve up delicious dishes made with fresh fish (mahi-mahi, talapia, shrimp and corvina, or sea bass are commonly offered), chicken dishes (orange/mango chicken with coriander, served with brown and wild rice is one favorite) or occasional red meat dishes ("typical" picadillo made with green papaya and pork, or Iraqi meatballs in a delectable sweet and tangy sauce). We accommodate vegetarian diets with such dishes as Spinach Risotto and Vegetarian Thai Curry over rice.

As our goal is healthful, enjoyable dining, you will feel good about AmaTierra's attention to freshness and wholesome ingredients. A beautiful salad is part of every dinner. We use only healthful oils, real butter and local honey, often substituting honey or "dulce" (minimally processed sugar cane, for white sugar.) Desserts are homemade and generally light, though we accommodate your love for chocolate!
